Just been dumped? We’ve all been there. If it was love, you probably feel like you’re never going to find someone else.
You can’t imagine what life was like before the pain. Before that hollow feeling.
Well, time to get over it. It’s not going to be easy but if you don’t start making positive steps towards getting over your ex, it’s never going to happen. We’ve put together these 5 tips to get you over that initial bump.
Release Your Emotions
As guys, it’s easy to just bottle everything up and pretend nothing ever happened. Enjoy the brewskis at your local bar, without ever mentioning the pain you’re actually feeling.
Forget the fake smiles and trying to be an alpha male. It’s not going to help.
It’s not a bad thing to tell your closest friends how you feel. I’m not saying you should cry from the rooftops, but don’t keep it all inside either. You need to heal and talking about your emotions is one of the best ways to do that.
Your friends will understand, especially if they’ve gone through a painful breakup. Remember, these are the times that true friends will make themselves known. Rely on your friends and be honest.
Do NOT Get in Touch
It’s tempting, isn’t it? You see her name on your phone and you just can’t help it. One phone call isn’t the end of the world.
But it is the start of a whole new chapter of pain and humiliation.
The best thing to do is to ignore her completely. She knows where you are. If she wants to talk to you, she will. We usually don’t suggest trying to get back together (it rarely works), but if you do then your only chance is to play the game.
This does not involve calling her in the middle of the night or sending her random presents to her office. Begging or crying is only going to make you the centerpiece of a humiliating story she’ll tell her friends.
Enjoy Your Freedom
It may be difficult to believe, but the single life can be extremely rewarding. It may even be better than what you had.
Try and do things you’ve never done before. Visit Peru, do the Inca Trail. Do a road trip across the United States. Climb the highest mountain nearest you. Pick up kitesurfing. You name it. Try something new.
There’s no point sitting around your house, moping around and feeling sorry for yourself. Playstation, watching TV in the dark and watching the Notebook on repeat isn’t going to be helpful. People are just going to feel sorry for you and your pain will be extended for longer than it needs to be.
Revisionist History
Was your relationship really that good or are you just choosing to remember the good bits? We’re pretty sure there were times where you really wished you were single. Or what about all the fights?
Do you really want her back? Did she make your life better?
It’s likely that the answer is a resounding NO. Cling onto that idea. It’s going to help you.
Play the Field
This is your time now. You can do whatever you want. Date anyone. Take advantage of the opportunity!
It’s not a good idea to get into a relationship straight away but who said anything about dating? Who knows, you might actually meet someone worth sticking around for. Otherwise, just enjoy meeting new people and having new experiences.
You’ll find that a lot of what you liked about being in the relationship had nothing to do with her in the first place. That’s why it’s probably a good thing you broke up anyway.
So there you have it. These tips should give you that boost you’re looking for. Make an effort to follow them!
